German Seamen's Mission Wilhelmshaven
The local Seamen's Club at Wilhelmshaven was founded in June 1959. After a careful and comprehensive restauration, it was re-opened at the Hegelstrasse 11 in November 1992. We are a official registered organization and are consisting of a committee with 7 persons, a secretary, a housekeeper, 109 members and a ship-boarding team including 2 ladies and 5 gentlemen. In 2003, this team has visited 1200 ships in total.
We all work with pleasure for our organization, and it is our aim to look after all ships lying in our port, whenever possible. This also comprises the relatives of the crewmembers onboard. All necessary facilities will be created by ourselves. We all are working on a honorary base and no one get's a salary for his duty. Here are some interesting facts about the daily work of our ship-boarding team:
The daily time of service depends on the number of visits and usually varies between 4 and 6 hours. The staff tries to look after all vessels which are presently lying in the port. The measurements are diverse. We find open hearts by submitting a fresh newspaper in the own language of each seafarer. A smalltalk on deck and/or a larger conversation in the messroom means a change in the daily routine of the crewmembers. The assistance is shopping downtown is always accepted with thanks. The transporation with our minibus forms a further part of our service. Depending on the duty onboard, our staff is capable to organize sightseeing-tours through the neighbouring area. The meetings with the seafarers are complex and all conversations are being held in a warm and heartful atmosphere. Any kind of help is highly appreciated.
We hope that we were able to give you a short view into the daily work of our ship-boarding team. This work is a benefit for everybody. By paying a yearly contribution of only EUR 20,00 you will support our work enormously. Come and visit us in the German Seamen's Mission Wilhelmshaven and get your informations about our work and facilities locally. If required, our ship-boarding team is prepared to offer lectures for larger groups.
We would be pleased to receive your phonecall and look forward to welcome you here.
